The snow is melting, the flowers are blooming, and warm-weather days are becoming more common. Spring is finally here, which means it's finally time to get those gardens started and ready for the sunshine! Nothing melts away the winter blues quite like a trip to your local greenhouse, so we rounded up our 10 favorites in Cincinnati. All of these garden centers offer a large selection of bedding plants, succulents, vegetable plants and more. And even if you weren't graced with a green thumb, most of these spots are family owned, and the staff is happy to help guide you to success! Happy planting!

A.J. Rahn Greenhouses has served the Cincinnati area since 1890. That's nearly 130 years of experience growing and nurturing beautiful gardens — so we know where we're going for recommendations! The center is still owned by the same family (now in the fifth generation), and offers a wonderful selection of houseplants, flowers, succulents, vegetable plants, fruit plants and more. If you look in the flower beds, you might also see an adorable calico cat (Cali) sleeping among the greenery.

Funke's Greenhouses

4798 Gray Road, Cincinnati | Facebook Funke's is one of the best local spots to shop for herbs and veggies. The staff is always working to expand its collection, which now includes a fantastic selection of peppers, heirloom tomatoes, heirloom squash, okra, eggplant and more! And the culinary and medicinal herbs are even more varied. Everything is grown on site, so you can count on your choices being completely GMO and pesticide free! To ensure the freshest products available, the greenhouse is only open from late March to mid November.

Joe Cappel's Garden Center

Joe Cappel's offers all of the common bedding plants you might expect alongside several hard-to-find, unique varieties! The company was started by Joe himself while he was still in highschool. He realized he had a passion for landscaping after working a part-time job, and chased that passion with everything he had. His hard work has paid off, and his company is blooming more than ever. Even if you don't have a game plan when you walk in, Joe, his younger brother Dan, and the rest of the helpful staff will help you figure things out! The motto here is that beautiful landscapes don't just happen, they are created. Bonus: Not looking forward to tackling this project yourself? Joe and the team also offer landscaping, lawn care and even snow removal services.

Burger Farm & Garden Center

7849 Main Street, Cincinnati | Facebook Burger Farm & Garden Center is not only a fabulous local place for stocking up on gardening supplies, it's also a fun destination for the whole family. Here, you'll find a large variety of fresh and colorful plants as well as several kid play areas and a place to purchase ice cream on site. The fun continues year-round as the center throws holiday-themed events and attractions for Halloween and Christmas. The gorgeous barn that houses the retail center is one of the oldest in Hamilton County and includes timbers that date back to before 1880 — the sight alone might be worth the trip!

HJ Benken Florist & Greenhouse

6000 Plainfield Road, Cincinnati | Facebook | Instagram This family-owned florist and garden center has been around since 1939. And though the shop has evolved over the years to fit the times, it has stuck to its original values of sustainability, friendly service and high quality products. The team is also conscious of its budget-savvy customers, and offers a value pack of popular seed annuals in a mixed container! Meander through the aisles of beautiful flowers and succulents to amp up your indoor or outdoor plant collection, or order a bouquet from the in-house florists to add some color to your dining room table.

Holscher Hackman Garden Center

6088 Harrison Avenue, Cincinnati | Facebook Most greenhouses and garden centers liquidate their supply when the cold weather hits, but that is not the case at Holscher Hackman. Instead, the company stocks up on unique and colorful plants at that time to give their customers the best selection year-round! And if you're looking for a difficult-to-find item, the staff is happy to help you track it down. Of course, even if you're not readily looking for gardening supplies, the greenhouse is still a joy to visit. The venue is so gorgeous that the staff often tells guests to enjoy their "walk in the park" while they're shopping around.

This family-owned spot is a favorite for landscape design and garden materials in the Tri-State Area, offering a large selection of evergreen trees, shrubs, colorful bedding flowers, decorative items and water garden supplies! Although the staff goes out of their way to ensure the highest quality products, the company offers a six-month guarantee! If any tree or shrub purchased dies within the first six months, you can have it replaced.

White Oak Gardens

3579 Blue Rock Road, Cincinnati | Facebook | Instagram White Oak Gardens is your one-stop shop for anything garden related. The center offers a large selection of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, vegetable plants and herbs, but you can also find pre-made container gardens, mulch and soil, and other materials for lawn care. You're free to shop at your leisure, but if you have no idea what you're doing, feel free to turn to the staff for assistance! They are happy to guide you in your design, and also offer landscape installation, design and maintenance services if you would prefer to leave it to the experts.

Northgate Greenhouses

3150 Compton Road, Cincinnati | Facebook | Instagram The histories of Northgate Greenhouses and Cincinnati's iconic Findlay Market are tied together. The Greenhouses company started in 1920 with founder Doc Krismer, who worked alongside his son to grow fruits and veggies year round to sell at the market. The business is still family owned, and offers a fabulous collection of flowering and vegetable plants to make any garden glow. During your visit, make sure to strike up a conversation with the knowledgeable staff — they are all happy to provide personalized plant tips and gardening ideas!

W.H. Shroyer Nursery

9791 Winton Road, Cincinnati W.H. Shroyer Nursery is a family-owned business dedicated to helping DIY gardeners create the perfect landscape. The spacious greenhouse occupies 18,000 square feet, and is filled to the brim with colorful flowering plants, fresh produce grown on-site, hanging plants, succulents and more.
