Located in the northernmost portion of Kentucky, Boone County encompasses 256 square miles, and is the fourth-most populous in the state. Although it is across the state line from Cincinnati, Boone County is part of the Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is composed of three cities, including Florence, Union and Walton, eight census-designated places, and five unincorporated communities. The county seat of Boone County is Burlington, which serves as the center for activity and government for the county. The county was formed in 1798 from part of Campbell County, and was named for frontiersman Daniel Boone.

Boone County is served by Boone County Schools and the Walton Verona Independent School District. The county is home to a variety of private schools, providing plenty of options for education. There are a number of institutions of higher learning in the county, including Beckfield College, Southwestern College and Indiana Wesleyan University, in addition to the many colleges and universities in Cincinnati. Boone County hosts the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which serves Cincinnati and the tri-state area. I-71 and I-275 run through the county, connecting it to Cincinnati, and providing easy access to and from the airport. Popular attractions here include the Creation Museum, Big Bone Lick State Park, the Boone County Arboretum, and more. Boone County is bordered by the Ohio River along the north and west edges of the county. The western portion is more rural with wide open green space and a more country feel, while the eastern area is dense with homes, businesses, and major roads.
